FORECAST NL
Newfoundland and Labrador is currently facing a series of pressing economic and social issues that will have both short and long-term consequences. These include substantial provincial debt, a declining and aging population, and the local and global effects of COVID-19. The effects of these social and economic threats will be worsened by the deepening climate emergency and its anticipated effects on oceans, coastal areas, health, and infrastructure. We need to be thoughtful, collaborative, and innovative in our development of solutions. Creative and practical solutions already exist, but they can't be adapted and brought to scale without a balanced approach and open dialogue--which brings us to the reason you are here!

Youth Climate Summit: This summer, take action!
Share on Facebook Share on Twitter Share on Linkedin Email this linkHi, Everyone
We wanted to share something with you that our colleagues are working on--please feel free to share this with any young people that you know, and, to our young ForecastNL members, please consider taking part!
[Note: Open this article to see the attached images of each day's schedule of great events!]
"The Climate Collective is a project run through Memorial University of Newfoundland and Labrador with the goal of connecting youth to opportunities for climate innovation. We’re looking for youth that are passionate about our planet and motivated to act! We want to connect them with engaging mentors and speakers, and hands-on STEAM opportunities.
This summer, Climate Collective is holding our first virtual Youth Climate Summit: Thursday, July 29th to Saturday, July 31st! We’ll be kickstarting the event with a special Facebook live presentation, "The Importance of Youth Climate Activism," with Fridays for Future St. John's on Wednesday, July 28th, a.k.a. World Nature Conservation Day! The theme for this year’s summit is “Take Action!” and the summit will feature presentations and workshops on solar energy, conscious buying, environment-based writing, taking climate action in your community and more!
In addition, we will be offering a Climate Action Planning session where you can learn how to create a project plan to reduce carbon emissions in your school or community. If you register with a small group, take part in our Climate Action Planning session and share your plan with us, and then join up as a Youth Climate Action Chapter with us this Fall, we will give your team $500 towards your Climate Action project!
Take a look at the Summit schedule on our website, Facebook and Instagram, and register here: https://event-wizard.com/ycs2021/0/register/. (Registration is free!)
If you have any questions, don’t hesitate to reach out: climate.collective@mun.ca."

"The Economic Impacts of Climate Change: At a Glance"--Read the Brief
Share on Facebook Share on Twitter Share on Linkedin Email this linkOur third session, on the economic impacts of climate change on NL, is happening tomorrow (at 12PM--check back here tomorrow morning for a link to join the Zoom session). To help you prepare, we've put together a short document that lays out some of the necessary information. Here, you'll find some "Quick Facts" about GHG emissions and net-zero targets (and also, a description of what net-zero actually means!), as well as some details about Canada and NL's current challenges and opportunities when it comes to climate change and our economy. One of our panelists, Elizabeth Beale, will be referencing this brief tomorrow in her pre-Q&A presentation on the topic.
You can access these images as a PDF URL by clicking here.
Take a look! (And see you tomorrow!)
